The army and police have arrested six people in Bandarban with 6 lakh taka in cash and collection receipt books. Police say the arrested people are members of the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF)-Democratic Party.

Police said they were arrested from Nilachal, Islampur, Ujanipara and Balaghata areas of the district town on Tuesday night. At that time, 6 lakh 33 thousand 488 taka, 20 collection receipt books, a knife and some equipment were seized from them. They were arrested after they could not give a satisfactory answer about the source of the money.

They were sent to jail through a court today, Wednesday.
The arrested persons are Pradeep Chakma (39), son of Taichang Chakma of Mahalchhari upazila of Khagrachari, Ripon Chakma (44), son of Bharat Chandra of Dighinala, Anion Chakma (31), son of Dhananjay Chakma of Baro Merung area, Birkumar Tripura (19), son of Sitaram Tripura of Bilaichhari, Rangamati, Wayse Marma (28), son of Mangshoi Marma of Balaghata Ambagan area of ​​Bandarban city, and Sukhen Tanchangya (25), son of the deceased Dhal Kumar Tanchangya of Tigerpara area.

The case statement filed at Bandarban Sadar Police Station said that the arrested persons used to openly collect extortion from vehicles and ordinary people, including businessmen, in various places in the district town under the identity of UPDF-Democratic.

Regarding this, Ubamong Marma, General Secretary of the UPDF-Democratic Party’s Bandarban District Committee, told Prothom Alo, “The arrested persons have come from outside. I have heard that they used to collect donations using the party’s name. However, no one in the district committee knows them.” He said that the district committee president is currently staying in Khagrachari and the district committee’s activities are suspended for the time being.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bandarban Sadar Police Station Masud Parvez said that the arrested persons have admitted their involvement as members of the UPDF-Democratic Party. They had been carrying out such activities for a long time.
